It is important to understand that the mat is a transitional space between the artwork and the frames, which should not "squeeze" or overshadow it. One way – the contrast principle – for dark-colored artworks, choose a light mat and dark frames. In another case – seek as much harmony and unity as possible – the mat color coordinated with the main colors of the painting, while the frames are chosen to be one tone lighter or darker than the artwork. The mat serves not only a decorative but also a protective function – creating an air gap between the artwork and the glass, it prevents moisture accumulation.

For black and white and retro photographs, choose smooth surface, pastel-colored – ivory, sand, snow white mats. If the photograph lacks space – combine two mats – a narrower and a wider one, where the outer one will be darker and more expressive, while the inner one will be lighter and more subdued. Decide on the impression you want to create based on the contrast or unity principle. For graphic works that require not only a mat but also glass, the most suitable is a gray-toned background, which will create a unified image with the artwork. To avoid blending, it should be wider or narrower than the painting frames.

For exotic souvenirs from travels, ancient parchments, the most suitable are night blue, red wine, chocolate-toned mats – they will highlight the ancient golden writings. If you choose a gold or ochre color background, it will blend with the artwork and seem to expand it. A small trick – when framing the artwork, leave a wider strip at the bottom than at the top, but choose the top and sides to be of equal width.
